Ranters & Crowd Pleasers: Punk in Pop Music 1977-92
Published in Hardcover by Doubleday (April, 1993)
Author: Greil Marcus
Average review score:

Extremely well-written account of exhilirating music
Marcus succeeds in articulating in print what was so wonderful about bands like Gang of Four, the Raincoats, X-Ray Spex, the Clash, etc. There is something truly significant captured in that music between 1976-late 1980s called "punk," and the author explains it unlike no other.

A good read and reference book
Very readable, good essays on The Clash, Bikini Kill, Sonic Youth, etc., you'll probably be glad to have it around if (70's-)80's(-'90s) pop-rock-punk is your thing and you go hunting for info on each new-old band you discover.

Raw Power: Iggy & the Stooges 1972
Published in Paperback by Creation Pub Group (2000)
Author: Mick Rock
Average review score:

Where The Stooges disappeard 1972?
In March 1972, Iggy and James, both completely off heroin, went on England to recruit a new band and start recording the album for CBS. In June joined Ron and Scott Asheton, and together worked on the new recordings until September same year. During their stay in London, The Stooges played only one concert in the King's Cross Cinema. Iggy was dressed only in silver lame trousers and had silver hair, black boots and black lipstick, his show and his mistreatment of audience had schocked all present. It was to be their only show outside America. This book is photographic report from this show, a few photo sessions of the whole band, and also contains common photos with David Bowie and Lou Reed, captured on camera by legendary rock photgrapher, Mick Rock. The book also contains his introduction and interview between virtuoso with camera Mick Rock and rock monster Iggy Pop, conducted in 1972. If you like album cover of "Raw Power", this book is made for you. Since there is no audio or video recording from any of The Stooges concert in 1972, this book offers unique experience for the band admirers. Raw Power! Look for the answer from the title in the book.

Some of the most exciting Rock n Roll pictures ever taken
IGGY POP & THE STOOGES, OUTTA DETROIT, WERE PRETTY MUCH THE UNIVERSALLY UNDISPUTED GREATEST INFLUENCE ON THE PUNK ROCK SCENE OF 1976-1977, WHICH PRODUCED CLASSIC BANDS LIKE THE CLASH AND THE SEX PISTOLS. IGGY & THE STOOGES' RECORDING CAREER LASTED FROM 1969-1973, RECORDING 3 STUDIO ALBUMS AND ONE NOTORIOUS LIVE ALBUM. 1972 WAS THE PEAK OF IGGY AND THE STOOGES BRILLIANCE AND OUTRAGEOUSNESS - IGGY'S ANTICS AND APPEARANCE MAKE THE SEX PISTOLS LOOK TAME IN COMPARISON. IF YOU WANT TO ACTUALLY SEE ROCK N ROLL, BESIDES HEARING IT - THIS IS THE BOOK THAT SHOWS WHAT ROCK N ROLL, AT IT'S MOST EXCITING, LOOKS LIKE. BLOOD AND MAKEUP AND BIZARRE/COMICAL/SICK POSES AND VISUAL RAW POWER! A MUST FOR EVERY IGGY/STOOGES/PUNK ROCK FAN, AND VERY LIKELY A FEAST FOR THE EYES FOR FANS OF ALL TYPES OF MUSIC!

Rhythm and Blues in New Orleans
Published in Paperback by Pelican Pub Co (November, 1983)
Authors: John Broyen and John Broven
Average review score:

One of the best books on New Orleans music
I think I have read this book at least 5 times. It easy to read and includes info about all the stars of New Orleans Rock and Roll.

THE CRADLE OF ROCK 'N' ROLL
This book is the original and still definitive book on New Orleans rhythm & blues, the music that was the true forerunner of what popularly became rock 'n' roll. As a boy in England, Broven was so thrilled by Little Richard's performance of the song "Long Tall Sally" in the movie DON'T KNOCK THE ROCK that he ran from the matinee showing at his local theatre to buy it before the record store closed. It was only years later that he discovered that Little Richard's hits, like those of his other favorite, Fats Domino (who dominated Louisiana music and rhythm & blues in the 1950s and is appropriately pictured on the cover) were recorded by New Orleans studio musicians who created the backbone of rockin' rhythm & blues. Other musicians featured here include Roy Brown, who popularized the word "rock" in rhythm & blues long before Alan Freed in his 1947 classic "Good Rockin' Tonight" (which like Little Richard and other New Orleans records were significantly covered by Elvis Presley); Aaron Neville, Dave Bartholomew, Lloyd Price, Allen Toussaint and legendary drummer Earl Palmer, the last four of whom have recently been inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Similarly to Charlie Gillett's groundbreaking classic THE SOUND OF THE CITY, Broven thoroughly covers the record companies who came to New Orleans to mine the city's musical gold, but he also takes an in-depth look into the musicians which made the city a musical force. RHYTHM & BLUES IN NEW ORLEANS features interviews with many of them, including Mac "Dr. John" Rebennack, whose lengthy reminisces during an English tour inspired the book. It is a must for anyone interested in the history of rhythm & blues, rock 'n' roll, black culture or New Orleans culture.

Rico (Rock Creek Six)
Published in Mass Market Paperback by Zebra Books (Mass Market) (November, 2001)
Author: Lori Handeland
Average review score:

An Opening for a Spin-off... I HOPE!
Rico is one of the original Rock Creek Six: six men, with violent pasts, who are hired to save the town of Rock Creek Texas, which then becomes their home, "or base of operation" as some might say.

Rico may be the worst gunman of the bunch, but his affinity for knives comes in handy and makes him the perfect match for Lily. Both have troubled pasts which come back to haunt them, but it makes for a great page-turner. And-without giving too much away- a person from Rico's past opens the door to a possible spin off, that I'm hoping will bring the Rock Creek Six back for more.

After reading about these guys...six books just really aren't enough! I recommend Rico, but suggest you read the whole series in order: Reese, Sullivan, Rico, Jed, Nate, and Cash. You won't regret it. I didn't!

Another Rock Creek fellow falls.......
This is the third book in the Rock Creek Six series. Three of the books are written by Lori Handeland and three by Linda Devlin. This series has become addictive. Rico is considered "the kid" by the fellows he has known and ridden with since the war. He like the rest of them has a past he is trying to forget. There doesn't seem to be a woman, at any age who can resist his good looks and easy charm. But there is always a first time for everything.
Lily, the latest edition to Rock Creek is also trying to forget a past and start new. Not only does she bring changes to Rock Creek, with her exotic beauty and voice of an angel, but to Rico's life as well. As in the previous books, not only does the main characters, Rico and Lily keep the pages turning...but the glimpses into the lives of Reese, Sullivan, Jed, Nate and Cash keep you wanting more. This is a series that is going on my keeper shelf. If you love a good western, with characters that become family, then this is the series for you.

Firsthand interviews blend with personal insights and notes on recommended readings in Denise Sullivan's Rip It Up!, which focuses on some major 'rock and roll rulebreakers' across genres, from Ike Turner and U. Wow
Ms. Sullivan really knows her stuff. I love her personal insights and the interviews. I have her REM book, too.

Rock A Bye Baby/Sleeptime Music/Hush Little Baby/Classical Lullabies/Lullabies from Many Lands/4 Cassettes in Wooden Crate (Cssts ed)
Published in Audio Cassette by Great American Audio Company (01 April, 1993)
Author: Nina Joan' 'Mattikow

a lovely and soothing collection of lullabyes, pure joy
This serene collection of sleepytime melodies is a sure winner for both parent and child. Nina Mattikow's lovely soprano voice soothes and relaxes, with a blend of popular and lesser-known (but equally enjoyable) tunes. The Classical Lullabyes tape is pure bliss, artistically accompanied with ocean waves, rhythmic breezes, and other sounds of nature's own symphony. The collection is a must for any nursery, and a welcome addition to your own bedside table as well!

Why it is good for our youth today.
This is an amazing piece of work. You have the childhood memories for the adults to pass on to their loving children. When I have children, I want to make sure that I can give them all the good things in life that I had, with out having them worry about the bad things. This book gives the masterpiece classic songs for healing a child with bad thoughts. It is even good for the adults to have, so they can look back on what helped them spend time with thier parents or helped them fall asleep. It is great for one and all to enjoy and share with others througout the years.

For years it's been playing every night at our house!
Our oldest son is 5yrs, and still reminds us to turn it on at bedtime. And if he awakens during the night he will go turn it on again. We have 3 kids and they all love it. One night they weren't able to listen to it because it accidentally got broken. They've all listened to it since they were born. But our 5yr old decided that night he could sing it to his 3yr. old brother and 2yr. old sister. I heard him on the baby monitor and it was so heartwarming!! I promised him I'd replace it soon and he hasn't forgotten that!

Rock A Bye Vol 2
While so many children's CDs are corny or condescending, this is really beautiful music. My son is five now, and we still love this collection of CDs, and play them often, sometimes at dinner or even while floating in the pool. The songs are so soothing, so touching, and so well sung, that we love them as much as he does--and will do so for years!

Rock and Roar Dinosaur

A book that makes learning about dinosaurs fun for all ages.
Rock and Roar Dinosaur captures the imagination of young dinosaur lovers like no other book has. Children respond to every song, from the title song Rock and Roar Dinosaur to the lullaby Mother Maiasaura, to the jump up and dance finale Dinosaur Dance. It is a colorful, musical feast that makes learning about dinosaurs fun! Parents will love the intelligent lyrics, the artistic illustrations and the wonderful rhythms and melodies. Parents will also appreciate the incredible talent that was brought together on this project, from the writer, Sam Austin, to the musical talent to the illustrator, Amy Appleby, this is a phenomenal piece.

New Dinosaur Book and Tape is Refreshing and Fun!
Sam Austin's "Rock and Roar Dinosaur" is as wonderful as its name. The book with accompaning tape is educational, colorful, and musically pleasing. Unlike other material available on Dinosaurs that focuses soley on whimsy, this work combines the fun of of that whimsey with true facts about Dinosaurs. The book/tape is a series of songs that each focuses on a different dinosaur. The entire work begins with a prologue that sets the tone and excitement for what is to come. My favorite is the title song, "Rock and Roar Dinosaur". This is a foot stomping, hand-clapping, sing-along number that encourages children to listen and take part. T-Rex lovers will adore, "The One and Only King" which sings the praises of the king of the dinosaurs. The work ends with the delightful "Dinosaur Dance" that is impossible not to get up and dance to.The entire work is worth a look and a listen. Parents will love its catchy tunes, and colorful pictures, teachers will love its educational value, and children will just love it! Treat yourself and your children to "Rock and Roar Dinosaur" a book that is sure to be cherished for years to come!
